Mating Habits
The attrition rate of Tuberosum alpinus by predation and lack of climactic
adaptation is such that a vigorous mating habit has evolved. The Female is
permanently in oestrus during the warmer months, fertilization is internal,
and the breeding cycle short; twenty-one days from impregnation to emergent
young. Unusually for this method of copulation, she does not gestate. In the privacy
of her cave the ovigerous Female lays between four and six hard-shelled eggs. These
are brooded by the Male, who grows a dense mat of hair on his bottom for
this purpose soon after he has mated.
